    ドラマ『ＪＩＮ−仁ー』の登場人物に澤村田之助（三代目）という役者がいたが、本書はその田之助の生涯を描いた作品だ。 その美貌と実力で抜群の人気を誇った田之助。それゆえか、それとも生来のものかは定かではないが、勝気で驕慢である。やがて脱疽を患い、そのため両足、両手を切断することになるが、それでも舞台に立ち続ける。この波乱と狂気とも言える生涯を架空の人物の視点から見つめている。 最初に刊行されたのが1987年で、文庫化は三回目。文庫はそれぞれ違う出版社である。田之助と彼を描いた本作が根強い人気を持っている証である。
