前前作、前作が整合感と緻密性に貫かれた意欲作であることに異論はない。異形と闇（延々と使い古されている）をアーティスティックに展開する戦略はポップミュージックにおける常套手段だが、彼らもうまくやってのけたのだ。自分たちのばら撒いたイメージは増殖し増幅されて「孤高のカリスマ」というありがたくもない陳腐な称号として帰って来た。これはマズイな、居心地が悪いな、軌道修正だ！とおもったかどうだかは知らないが、聞き手に中指を突き立てて、薄ら笑いをうかべているのが今作だとしたら痛快だ！前２作にあった得体の知れない何か（そう思わせるイメージ）は、同時にいまひとつ吹っ切れない、突き抜けないもどかしさでもあった。 「もっとダイナミックでレアでライブでなければダメだ！」というのが今作製作当時のTOOLの時代認識だったのだろう。開き直ったかのようなフレッシュでハイエナジーな傑作！
