　時々、喉が渇いた時に柑橘系の果汁なしのジュースが無性に飲みたくなるように、幼いころに読んだ童話のようなファンタジックなアルバムが聴きたくなることがあります。一つはＥＬＯの『ディスカバリー』であり、もう一つがこの『運命の切り札』です。　カーペンターズの『ナウ・アンド・ゼン』とは音楽性とコンセプトが異なっており、『アビー・ロード』に例えるには少し無理があるのですが、共通点として、レコードのＢ面に組曲風のメドレーを持ってくるといったドラマチックな構成となっています。　鋭いナイフのように切れのいい”動”の「Games People Play」と2001年の宇宙旅行を想わせる壮大な”静”の「Time」という２つのミリオン・ヒットが核となっているＡ面と、サウンドトラックのようなスケール感のタイトル曲に挟まれてスームレスにトランプ物語が綴られているＢ面。万人受けするポップでライトなプログレッシヴさに評価が分かれるところでしょうが、タブレット端末で再現できる程度のバーチャルなエンターテインメント性を持ち合わせていて、Ｂ級作品とは一味違った確かな質感があります。

　個人的には、何と言っても「願い If I Could Change Your Mind」、この曲に尽きます。　特にシングル・ヒットしたわけでもないのに、８０年代半ばには、某ＦＭ局の深夜の音楽番組で何度か流されていました。　このアルバムのラストに収められている渾身のバラード・ナンバーは、静かなピアノの旋律で始まり、囁くように唄い始める女性ボーカルは徐々にテンションを上げ、最後は切ない願いのようなタイトル・フレーズとそれを支える重厚なオーケストレーションのリフレインで幕を閉じます。　ある意味、完璧を求めて計算し尽くされた、音楽のサグラダ・ファミリアのような風格を感じさせる１曲です。　遠目には普通に見えて実は普通ではない２人の女性のジャケット写真もそうですが、美しいものの内側に潜む影の部分を一つの美学として描き出しています。　プロ野球で勝っているゲームを締めくくるクローザーのような役割を担う”決め”の１曲のラインナップは、後の『運命の切り札』や『Ammonia Avenue』へと引き継がれていきます。
