1933年4月30日、テキサス州フォート・ワース生まれ。 60年代初頭、パッツィ・クライン「クレイジー」等、カントリー・ヒットの作者としての活動を経て、ソロ・アーティストとしてレーベル契約を果たすがヒットに恵まれず、70年にナッシュビルからテキサスに戻った彼は、75年にCBSと契約。
