1940年代にCootie Williamsと一緒にサックスを演奏していたという兄を持つOliver Nelsonは1932年5月4日、セントルイスに生まれている。6歳でピアノを始め、11歳でサックスを演奏し始め、40年代末にはローカルバンドで演奏をし、50〜51年にかけてLouis Jordanのビッグバンドに参加する。 その後、2年間を海兵隊の兵役で過ごした後、作曲と楽理をセントルイスの二
