Comin' Home Baby

Mel Torme was more than accomplished songwriter, penning more than 250 songs during the course of his career, including many that have gone on to become standards. The Comin' Home Baby album, however, features Mel offering his interpretations of several other standards from the era, most notably the title track, which was originally recorded by Donald Bailey and then Herbie Mann. The version that Mel recorded had lyrics added by Bob Dorough and resulted in a Top 40 hit for Mel. Whilst the album has been somewhat dismissed by numerous critics since it's original release, it is as good an example of Mel's vocal style as there is currently available, ably supported by a veritable big band and arranger Shorty Rogers.
