Gerry Mulligan played his baritone saxophone with such elegance that the heaviness of his instrument almost didn't show. The tone he elicited from his sax was unmistakable: smooth, legato and seemingly a bit chilly, yet extremely emotional under the surface. As a musician Mulligan will always be remembered for his admirable control and never-failing improvisational imagination. In 1975, Arrigo Polillo said: 'His music is calm and simple, yet elegant and exciting, pure and sparkling, stern and sweet. It is totally uncluttered, unadorned and strictly essential.'

　1958年のニュポート・ジャズフェステュヴァルの演奏を記録した映画『真夏の夜のジャズ』でのマリガンの真っ赤なジャケット姿はジャズファンにジ強烈な印象を与えると共に、アメリカが持っている富の大きさを感じさせた。ジェリー･マリガンこそは、1950年代のジャズメンの中でもチェット･ベイカーと並んで哀愁の薫るミュージシャンとして忘れられない。
