David Gates is best known as the leader of the group Bread. Bread disbanded in 1973, much to the surprise of fans and the music industry. After Bread dissolved, he issued a number of fine solo albums. His first solo album was appropriately titled First. Gates recorded and produced his solo album First in 1973. The single Clouds peaked at #47 on Billboard's Hot 100 singles chart and #3 on the Adult Contemporary chart. Wounded Bird.

ブレッド脱退と解散の、両方の苦悩を抱えていた頃からのプロジェクトが結実。名品揃いの楽曲に加え、後の西海岸派と呼ばれるスタジオ出身のバックメンの瑞しい演奏の冴えも味わえる好アルバム。時を経て尚、輝きを増す彼のメロディこそ稀代の資質を物語る一枚。
