商品説明

This collection of some of the best Bessie Smith recordings of 1927-1928 starts out quite happy with joyous versions of Alexander's Ragtime Band, After You've Gone, and There'll Be a Hot Time in the Old Town Tonight, showing that Smith could turn anything into a blues. The mood darkens later in the program with such numbers as Send Me to the 'Lectric Chair, I'd Rather Be Dead and Buried in My Grave, It Won't Be You, and Devil's Gonna Get You, but these songs are also leavened by some wit, as is the two-part Empty Bed Blues. The Empress of the Blues was at the peak of her powers during this period and at the height of her commercial success. Although this CD does not contain every selection she recorded during this period (it is a best-of set), it does feature many gems. ~ Scott Yanow, Rovi

Bessie Smith

The first major blues and jazz singer on record and one of the most powerful of all time, Bessie Smith rightly earned the title of The Empress of the Blues. Even on her first records in 1923, her passionate voice overcame the primitive recording quality of the day and still communicates easily to today's listeners (which is not true of any other singer from that early period). At a time when the b
