1965/LONELY TOWN, LONELY STREET/CALL ME

Alwin Lopez “Al” Jarreau (March 12, 1940 - February 12, 2017) was an American singer and musician. He received a total of seven Grammy Awards and was nominated for over a dozen more. This collection features three albums recorded by the great Al Jarreau early in his career. 1965 is pure jazz and showcases his superb jazz vocal chops. Lonely Town, Lonely Street and Call Me pay tribute to two other great contemporary singers, Bill Withers and Al Green, respectively.

Often pigeon-holed as a jazz singer, Jarreau had an eclectic style that defied genre classification. He embraced jazz, r&b and pop, and was the only vocalist in history to net Grammy Awards in all three categories. His versatility is evidenced in the recordings included here, to which Jarreau brought his unique personal vision to the pop and soul hits of Bill Withers and Al Green and to a set of jazz standards. Al Jarreau died February 12, 2017 of respiratory failure, at the age of 76, just two days after announcing his retirement.
