ロンドン郊外の中学校で歴史を教える教師バーバラは新任の美術教師シーバに並々ならぬ親近感を感じ、なんとか親しくなろうとする。世間や同僚から疎んじられ、唯一心を許せるのは愛猫だけという初老の女性は、若く美しいシーバとの友情に崇高な意義を求めたのだ。しかしシーバが15歳の教え子と不倫中と知ったバーバラの心に黒い感情が渦巻き始め・・・
